Cindy Underhill: Digital Tattoo Strategic Co-Lead

I’ve been involved with the Digital Tattoo project since 2008 – as part of the team that first proposed the project and received a grant through UBC’s Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund.  I bring a learning design lens to the project – which basically means keeping the focus on our (mainly student) audience, their challenges and questions and what we need to do to provoke thought, inform and ultimately support good decision making for those who have that as their goal.

We started the Digital Tattoo project when there was very little information on the web for students about the responsibilities and ripple effects of sharing online (both positive and negative).  Online, social platforms were easy to use but many students soon found themselves grappling with issues related to privacy, reputation, ethics, permissions, context, employment, etc. I think it is now one of a growing number of resources aimed at helping students think about the tools, applications and strategies they use everyday when they consume, create, participate and interact online.  I see the Digital Tattoo resource as a step in the process of navigating a complex, interconnected world.  Participating in it, though,  – doing, creating, publishing and learning by trial and error – is probably the only true way to develop web literacies. Hopefully the Digital Tattoo site acts as a bit of a touchstone for information and reflection in the process.

I am passionate about public access to information and the role of the university in public knowledge creation. I’m proud that the resources we create for the DT project are openly licensed and available for anyone to learn from or re-use.

I value curiosity, empathy and patience – qualities that are often overlooked and under-appreciated. I have a black cat (Max) who possesses at least two of these!

I don’t know how to read music but I love to play keyboard and guitar – by ear and with the help of YouTube!
