Employers Dig for Dirt

  • How do employers use the web to find out about applicants?
  • Can my digital tattoo affect my chances of getting a job?
  • If someone Googles my name, what will they find?

Consider these questions as you review the examples below. Try the quiz from the left menu: What Have You Learned? after you’ve spent some time with this section.

According to a 2007 survey, 83% of employers look up job applicants online before deciding on whether or not to hire them. Almost half of those employers, furthermore, decided against certain candidates based purely upon their online reputation. Studies as recent as 2010 show similar results.

When you’re thinking about a job, whether it is a career or a part-time gig, expect employers to look you up. They often use Google, Facebook or Twitter to see what you’re really like.

If they find any questionable material they will think twice before even interviewing you. What can you do to make sure your digital tattoo helps your job prospects?

  • Use an email address that sounds professional– potential employers may hesitate to correspond with suga_lipz@interchange.ubc.ca
  • Search for your name in both Google and Pipl.com, frequently. If you don’t like what you see, try deleting it by yourself or contact the site administrator politely asking them to do it.
  • Remove or restrict access to any pictures, messages or videos you would not want your boss or coworkers to see from your online profile.

  1. This is very interesting, google showed only a professional profile of me, but when I dig further with pipl, I found my old diary, old photos which I created when I was 15..
I wonder if there could be a “checklist” for online reputation .F or example:
1.Is my email address professional? (not like candy_lips, open_heart)
2.Is your username same as your full name?(not like rienamba)

and there could be ways to avoid having a bad online reputation, such as professional email account separate from personal email account, use a fake name/nickname for personal activities

Or about what people tend to make mistakes such as: Once it is public, I could set it back to private again – No once it is public, it will show up on google. (especially for blog posts)
